VisasTourist Information

Ethiopia offers a unique world to tourists. Contrary to a view widely held in the West that Ethiopia is just a land of deserts and famine, it is in fact a country of extremes of topography, beautiful scenery and generous people.

The Semien Mountains and other National Parks offer fabulous trekking and visual opportunities, and historic sites date back before the time of Christ. Ethiopia is home to 77 million people with a wide range of cultures and language. As the country was never colonised, much more of a distinctly national outlook and lifestyle remains intact than is the case in many of Ethiopia's African neighbours.

The country is ready for tourists. From the world-class Sheraton in the capital Addis Ababa to village hospitality in rural areas, there is a range of accommodation to suit all pockets. Some restaurants serve traditional food, others cater for European tastes. Night life abounds in the capital and major cities.

Ethiopian Airlines, with over 50 years experience, can take the tourist around the country quickly in modern aircraft. Alternatively tour companies can arrange land transport. A trip on a local bus is worth the experience.

All travellers will need a visa to enter Ethiopia. These are available from the Consulate in Melbourne (see our Visas link).

There are three good travel guides:
Guide to Ethiopia, 3rd Edition, Philip Briggs, published by Bradt
Lonely Planet: Ethiopia and Eritrea
Spectrum Guide to Ethiopia published by Camerapix
